Bystanders can be converted to life-saving providers of emergency care for sudden cardiac and breathing crises. Individuals trained to recognize such emergencies and respond with quality resuscitation techniques have saved lives. A series of DVD lectures will be followed by an opportunity to practice on mannequins, under close supervision, while your skills are honed. You will learn about initiating the chain of command; adult, child, and infant cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR); maintaining an airway; treatment for choking; using an automated external defibrillator (AED); and treatment of respiratory failure in an opioid overdose. We will explain basic anatomy and functions of the heart, chest, and airways. We will allow adequate time for questions. You will finish confident about being the person in charge during a medical emergency and overcoming any reluctance to intervene until you hand off care to professionals. Successful completion of this course will earn you a two-year CPR/AED certificate.
