LOST PERSON? CALL 911
TSAR is in the forefront of teams across New Mexico and in the country using drones for improving search and rescue results. With the use of the integrated camera, virtual reality goggles for an observer, GPS data collection, and programmed tracking or search patterns the use of a drone can be an indispensable tool in the right conditions.
A SAR team in Southern New Mexico was the first to locate a lost subject via a drone search. Very recently, a lost kayaker was found after a drone pilot and team spotted the kayak.
Any TSAR members and applicants are welcome to come train with the Unit. Drone flying is a team effort, as several observers assist the operating pilot and the certified pilot in command. The Unit also trains with the other in-the-field Units to be ready when a search mission call-out suggests that the use of a Drone is both feasible and beneficial.
There are both federal and state procedures and policies in place to ensure the legal and safe operation of aerial unmanned aircraft in search and rescue operations. NM SAR has special insurance for drone use in search and rescue operations. The Drone Unit has several certified pilots that have passed rigorous FAA testing and a great small team as support. This Unit is always seeking more members so please feel free to get involved with TSAR, an all volunteer organization.
The Drone Unit is on the cutting edge of search technologies. If you love things aeronotics and electronics, then perhaps the Drone Unit is for you!
