Always carry a paper map and compass in the backcountry. Not only will they save you if your primary navigation fails (i.e. smartphone or GPS), but will also assist you in more effective navigation in combination with your smartphone.
TIP 2
MAPPING
Consider studying the area you are venturing into before your trip. Identify prominent terrain features and landmarks, identify hazards, and pre plan your route beforehand. This will prevent a lot of headaches and stress if things go wrong.
TIP 3
MAPPING
Identify where your car is parked and mark it on your map.
Consider purchasing a compass that accounts for magnetic declination. Although a standard compass can always be used with the proper knowledge, a compass that adjusts for magnetic declination will take the guesswork out of the equation.
