ABOUT BACKCOUNTRY MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS...
This course will serve as an introduction to backcountry preparations focusing on the prevention of medical emergencies and actions to take in case they occur. Topics covered begin with a self-assessment of medical readiness for the backcountry environment and an in depth look at what you can carry for first aid when outside. Discussions will be led on what to carry to treat minor injuries so that you can continue to enjoy the outdoors. Most importantly we will work on identifying life threatening situations such as hypothermia prior to when they occur and actions you can take to return safely home.
Participants will learn:
• how to plan backcountry recreation in regards to preventing medical emergencies
• what belongs in a first aid kit
• to recognize Signs and Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment options for: hyperthermia, hypothermia, altitude sickness, & hyper/hypo natremia
At the completion of this course students will be more aware of what environmental factors effect outdoor recreation in the backcountry. Participants will have reviewed typical ailments that affect us in Northern New Mexico; learn, discuss, and initiate treatment from personal first aid kits for those ailments in a classroom and field environment.
Those who love outdoor recreating such as hiking, trail running, mushroom hunting, exploring, snow shoeing/back country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, climbing, and more can benefit greatly from this course.
